SCOPE OF VETERINARY SCIENCE AND ANIMAL HUSBANDARY

Veterinary Science was well developed in India as early as the Vedic period and the world`s first veterinary hospital in Ashoka`s regime . The first Veteriary  was established  in Bombay (1884), in Bengal (1993), in Madras (1902) and in Bihar (1930).At the time of Independence ,there were nine Veterinary colleges in India . Today  India has the largest livestock population in the world, contributing to 15 percent of the world population. Livestock industry of India contributes  8 percent of the  GDP, Where as 32 percent of GDP  contribution  from the agriculture industry  come from livestock itself . Great growth can be expected  in the field based on the numbers.

Veterinary science , the science and art of diagnosing,treating and caring of sick animals, encompasses  all types of diseases and treatments of small animals, birds and big mammals. Previously there was  no consciousness about animals, Today people are more aware about the field of Veterinary Science. Farmers know about the importance of animal management at farms. Veterinary Science made simple practioners are commonly called Veterinary doctors or Vets. They perform surgery as well as all types of treatment, Breeding, genetic engineering as well as caring for livestock. In Asia, among the top veterinary school is Punjab Agriculture University. To  practice as a Vetrinarian  it is essential to have a Bachelor`s Degree in Veterinary Science ( B.V. Sc ). For admission to Master`s programme the Indian Council for Agriculture and Research (ICAR)  conducts  All India Entrance Examination, PG Course in Veterinary  Science ( MV Sc) is for two Years.

Eligibility:  Student who have passed 10 + 2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology are eligible for apply under graduate course in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. At national level, Veterinary Council of India conducts All India Pre-Veterinary Test in May for aspiring undergraduates.

Course Structure:The course duration is Five Years, in this 5-Year course, the last six months are devoted to hands on training in disease management. The course can be broadlydivided into basic scinces and clinical sciences. During the the course spanning nine semisters contains Anatmy,Physiology, Biochemistry,nutrition, livestock management and production, Production technology, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Genetics and Breeding. Gynaelogy,Surgery, Medicine and Animal husbandary are other important subjects of the course.Learning process is through theory and laboratory sessions.The last six months of the final year are devoted to hands-on training on animal and poultry diseases and management.The six months intensive internship programme  is offered in clinics and hospitals.

In accordance with Indian Veterinary Council Act 1984, the registered Veterinary degree holders are eligible to practice in the country. The degree holder must have acquired the required qualification from a recognized institution of academic excellence.

Being a good vet: You need to feel genuine compassion for animals, since animal don’t speak, you need to read the signs from their behavior, Owner feedback and diagnose the ailment correctly. Ability to handle emergencies and working in physically disagreeable conditions is required. Back kicks  by an animal in pain should be expected. If you work with large animals , you need physical stamina and quick body reflexes to tackle their behavior.

Entrance Exams: 1) All India Pre-Veterinary Test ( AIPVT )  15% Of the total number of seats of the veterinary colleges.
